Drawings

Drawings and sketches are a window into the mind of an artist.  You may say, "isn't all of an artist's work a window into his/her mind"?  I believe the answer is yes, but I think drawings offer a view from a partially opened window.  Drawings are the first step of a piece of work-those initial steps when an artist is first navigating an idea.  Sometimes the finished piece looks a lot like what the artist first rendered on paper, and sometimes the finished work has been altered a little or a lot during the painting process.
Drawings in and of themselves speak just as much as oil paintings-but perhaps in a much quieter voice.  The simplicity of pencil and paper makes a much gentler statement, and is a very intimate medium.  There are many ways to apply and manipulate paint on a canvas-brushes, knives, cloth, and any number of homemade tools.  But with pencil and paper, it's just that-pencil, paper, and the artist's hand.
The pieces in this collection vary in intensity.  Some are just quick, simple line drawings, and others are deliberate, detailed.  Some have, and eventually may become paintings.  Others were just done for the love of drawing itself and the desire to speak quietly for awhile.  I hope you enjoy them!

Meditation Series

This collection came about as a result of discovery.  Recently I discovered the music of  the composer Phillip Glass.   I had heard his compositions before in the films "Notes on a Scandal" and "The Illusionist"- I loved the music, but did not take the time to research the film scores or the composer.  Ironically, I watched a documentary a few months ago about a composer named Phillip Glass and was enthralled by what I heard - finally I took the time to research and listen to his music.  What I heard was so incredibly moving, that I immediately decided to do a series of paintings inspired by his music.
To me, music and my art are inextriably linked.  It may be genetic-my father is a very accomplished musician and I have been exposed to many genres of music since I was a small child.  Today, I cannot work in my studio without music playing- it is as necessary as oxygen.  It is music that first captures my attention, spurring feelings and emotional reactions-the visual images soon follow, and they came in a rush when I listened to Phillip Glass.
His music is at times described as "minimalist", although he prefers to refer to himself as a composer of "music with repetitive structures".  It is that repetitive, meditative quality that I found so immediately engaging and appealing.  The human body seems to be the perfect vehicle to illustrate what I feel and imagine when I hear his music- movement, stillness, heartache, love.  His body of work is quite prolific, but for this series, I was focused on his Orphee Series, Metamorphosis, the Trilogy Sonata, and his piano Etudes.
I'm calling this body of work the "Meditation Series" firstly because these paintings are quite simply my meditations on what I myself am hearing.  Secondly, it is my hope that as you look at these paintings, you will listen to the music of Phillip Glass and meditate on the images-not only looking at what I have painted, but imagining what came before the moment that I've captured on canvas, and what may come after.
